COUNCIL: September 18 Meeting Recap

At today’s meeting, the Council:

  • discussed the City’s Capital Improvement Program. Each year, the Council reviews the Capital Improvement Program budget by going over a list of prioritized projects that involve the construction, purchase or renovation of buildings, parks, streets or other physical structures. The Council will take action on the Capital Improvement Program budget in the coming weeks.
  • discussed electric scooters, including feedback from the community. Discussion centered on safety concerns, scooters on sidewalks, and the ways other cities are approaching the new technology. The Administration is working on education efforts to clarify laws and etiquette. The City currently has temporary agreements in place with a few electric scooter companies. The Administration is working on developing an ordinance that would create standards for how all “shared mobility device” companies, including electric scooter companies, operate locally. The Council will discuss this topic again as the ordinance is drafted and processed.
  • held a public hearing about the inland port at which 19 individuals addressed the Council. Comments focused primarily on environmental concerns associated with the future port, and impacts to neighboring communities. The Council recently held three fact finding sessions with experts and stakeholders about the port.
