Commercial Animal Retailers Requirements

The Council recently adopted an ordinance that would require commercial animal retailers to obtain the dogs, cats, and rabbits they sell from animal shelters and similar agencies.

The ordinance would make it illegal for commercial establishments to sell these animals to the public unless they were obtained from a City animal shelter, County animal shelter, animal control agency, humane society, or non-profit rescue organization. The restrictions are intended to prevent “puppy mills” and “backyard breeders” who may disregard the welfare of animals sold to pet stores.

Pet stores currently practicing outside the scope of the ordinance will have 90 days from November 13, 2018 to comply.
