Redistricting Advisory Commission Recommends Maps

Over the past few months the Redistricting Advisory Commission deliberated boundary changes to Salt Lake City districts.

SALT LAKE CITY – The Redistricting Advisory Commission consisting of one representative for each of the seven Council Districts and two at-large members, formed on February 15, 2022, released their recommended maps for Salt Lake City Council’s consideration. Over the past few months, the Redistricting Advisory Commission deliberated boundary changes, considered public comments, and selected six maps from about 25 proposals. The commission also reviewed nearly a hundred maps that were created prior to their meetings.

The Redistricting Advisory Commission recommended the following maps:

The Commission’s Vice Chair, Eric Kenney said “This process really helped me understand the nuances of our city that just aren’t super obvious. It was really interesting to work with the other commissioners on what’s important at a street by street and neighborhood by neighborhood level. They further stated, “I want the residents to know that we were all very thoughtful in how we approached boundaries, trying to be as considerate as possible of the numerous factors and complexity which is our beautiful city!”

Redistricting is a process that occurs every ten years, where states, counties and cities use the most recent census data to designate electoral boundaries. Local redistricting determines which neighborhoods and communities in the city are grouped together into districts that elect City Council Members. By ensuring each district has approximately the same number of people, redistricting provides fairer representation on the City Council.

The Salt Lake City Council is working to ensure fairly represented, non-partisan voices help shape Salt Lake City’s Districts.

It’s your city, it’s your business!
