SALT LAKE CITY, UT – The City Council’s annual citywide budget discussions begin for the fiscal year 2021-22 in earnest this month. Join us in the conversation about the budget and City services! The City’s goals and the needs of those who live, work, and play in the City are especially important to the Council when reviewing the proposed budget. Your input is needed on City services and how tax revenues and fees should be spent.

The City budget is one of the Council’s strongest policy-making tools and one of the most important opportunities for public input. The discussions kick off with the Mayor’s recommended budget presentation on Tuesday, May 4 at 7 p.m. and end with a vote in mid-to late June.

The Council meets weekly on Tuesdays until mid-June to discuss and fine-tune the budget for the upcoming fiscal year, which runs July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022. Follow along and weigh in by joining virtual public hearings on Tuesday, May 18 or Tuesday, June 1 at 7 p.m.

As the pandemic situation continues to evolve, Salt Lake City is working closely with the Health Department to balance public health with the responsibility to continue serving Salt Lake City residents and businesses. Until further notice, Council Meetings remain virtual with no physical location for the meeting. You can join online or call to participate in a Public Hearing or make a general comment. Visit www.slc.gov/council/virtual-meetings for connection information.

At a Formal Meeting in June, the Council will adopt the budgets for the City which includes budgets for the Library, Airport, and Public Utilities (stormwater, sewer and water, and street lighting services), the Redevelopment Agency, and the Local Building Authority. The adopted Budget in its entirety will be available upon publication online here: www.slc.gov/Finance/investor-relations-city-financials/budget.

If necessary, a Truth in Taxation Hearing, a public hearing required by the State to notify property owners when property taxes may increase, will be held in August and formally completes the annual budget process. The hearing gives the public an additional opportunity to comment on any proposed tax increase. To learn more about the budget process: tinyurl.com/SLCFY22Budget
