March 31, 2022 declared as Cesar Chavez Day in SLC

WHEREAS, Cesar Chavez Day is observed nationally on March 31 of each year, in celebration of Cesar Chavez’s birthday, and in remembrance of his work; and

WHEREAS, President Obama proclaimed Cesar Chavez Day to be a national observance in 2014, and in his proclamation echoed that “every life has value, and everyone — no matter who you are, what you look like, or where you come from — should have the chance to get ahead;” and

WHEREAS, Cesar Chavez was instrumental in the founding of the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA), as well as the 1965 Grape Strike. His work saw the widespread empowerment of farm workers, the negotiation of hundreds of labor contracts, the passing of landmark law, and much more; and

WHEREAS, today we honor the lifetime of activism that Cesar devoted to his fellow citizen, and the world of change that he created while he was alive; and

WHEREAS, as we honor the legacy of Cesar Chavez, let us also continue his legacy, in the form of remaining ever committed to the advancement and protection of the rights of workers; and

WHEREAS, let us also be vigilant in doing our part to focus on the incorporation of equitable practices in our communities, workplaces, and homes.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Erin Mendenhall, Mayor of Salt Lake City, proclaim March 31st, 2022 as:
