Closed Captioning Guides for Streaming Services

Netflix

  1. Open Netflix.
  2. Select a TV show or movie.
  3. Begin playing and take the action listed for your device:

Smart TV, Blu-ray players, set-top boxes, gaming systems, streaming media playersPress the up or down arrow on the remote
Apple TV 2 or Apple TV 3Hold down the center button on the Apple TV remote
Apple TV 4 and Apple TV 4KSwipe down on the Apple TV remote

4. At either the top or bottom of the screen, select Audio & Subtitles  . On TVs, language options may appear at the bottom without the icon. You can choose from the languages shown or select Other to see all language options.

5. Make changes to the audio or subtitle selections.

Hulu:

  1. During playback, press the up button or swipe down on your remote to pull up the playback bar
  2. Press or swipe up again to open the Settings menu
  3. Under Captions & Subtitles, select On or Off

Apple TV:

  1. During playback, press the up button or swipe down on your remote to pull up the playback bar
  2. Press or swipe up again to open the Settings menu
  3. Captions & Subtitles, select On or Off

Disney+:

Smart TV

  1. While watching a video in Disney+, select the Audio & Subtitles button at the top right of the video player
  2. Select Subtitle Styling
  3. On this screen, you can customize the subtitle appearance for your device. Your changes will automatically be saved

Apple TV

  1. Go to the Settings app
  2. Select General
  3. Select Accessibility
  4. Select Subtitles & Captioning
  5. Select Style
  6. On this screen, you can choose a preset style, or you can create a new one
  7. If you create a new style, turn off Video Override in Font, Size, Color, and Opacity

Amazon Fire TV

  1. Access Settings from the Home screen
  2. Select Accessibility
  3. Turn on Closed Caption
  4. Customize your display preferences, including text size and style

Note: Subtitles are not available on the 1st generation Fire TV Stick. Read more about Disney+ caption settings here.
