SLC Trail Trekkers

Salt Lake City Trails and Natural Lands presents “SLC Trail Trekkers” – a free, friendly hiking club that is open to all! These hikes are sure to introduce you to new trails, new people, and a new or continued love of the outdoors.

All hikes start 10 Minutes after meeting time, and start and end in the same location. Finish times are estimated and may vary. Please check our facebook page here the day of a hike for notices of cancellation due to weather or other circumstances.

Please obey all park rules. On-leash dogs are welcome.

Safety is your own responsibility during the hikes. We recommend you bring the following items to stay safe:

  • At least 2 liters of water
  • Weather/Climate appropriate clothing
  • Hiking boots or shoes
  • Plenty of snacks
  • Head-lamp or flashlight
  • Extra layers of clothing
  • First aid kit

*Hikes with an asterisk are part of the BSA hiking merit badge curriculum. Contact Scott Lippitt if you are interested in earning your hiking merit badge.

2019 Hikes

April 3rd @ 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM:  Ensign Peak (0.8 Miles, Beginner Friendly) CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER

  • Ensign Peak is a must do, moderately sloped hike leading to an expansive, historical view of the Salt Lake Valley.
  • Meet at 1003 Ensign Vista Drive (Map).

April 17th @ 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM: Red Butte Skyline Loop (2 Miles, Moderate)

  • A great beginner foothills hike that shares a portion on the Bonneville Shoreline Trial.
  • Parking: Head east (“up-canyon”) on Red Butte Canyon Road and park where the pavement turns to dirt. No parking at Red Butte Gardens, Natural History Museum of Utah, or the University of Utah School of Medicine lot. It is also possible to take Trax to the Fort Douglas Station and walk about half a mile to the meeting spot.

May 1st @ 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM:  Jordan River Parkway Trail (2.5 Miles, Beginner Friendly)

  • A flat, scenic walk along the Jordan River. We will start at the 17th South River Park, stroll to the beautiful International Peace Gardens, and return.
  • Meet at the 17th South River Park parking lot, 1150 W 1700 S (Map).

June 5th @ 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM:  Parley’s Historic Nature Park (2 Miles, Moderate)

  • If you love a moderate hike, dogs happily roaming, and awe-inspiring views of the Wasatch front, then Parley’s Historic Nature Park is your paradise!
  • Meet at Parley’s Historic Nature Park Parking Lot, 2667 Heritage Way (Map).

June 19th @ 6:30 PM – 9:00 PM:  “Living Room” Sunset Hike! (2.2 Miles, Challenging)

  • Follow a dirt trail with a 20% grade up to the “Living Room” complete with rock chairs and a slab couch facing the jaw-dropping view.
  • Park along Colorow Road near Huntsman’s Way (Map)
  • Be sure to bring headlamps or flashlights for this hike!

July 17th @ 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM:  Memory Grove (2 Miles, Beginner Friendly)

  • The gentle, consistent incline on the way up canyon is rewarded with an enjoyable downhill descent – all accompanied by the wonderful scenery of hills, trees and City Creek.
  • Meet at 300 North Canyon Road and parallel park along street (Map)

August 7th @ 5:30 PM – 8:00 PM:  Twin Peaks of the Avenues (5 Miles, Challenging) *

  • Soak up the views and the satisfaction of standing on a peak on this outstanding ‘out-and-back’ hike in the foothills. 
  • Park along the street at 1020 Terrace Hills Drive (Map)

August 24th @ 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM:  Memory Grove to City Creek Canyon (10 Miles, Moderate/long) *

  • We will be hiking from Memory grove into City Creek Canyon and back for a 10 mile hike.
  • Meet at 300 North Canyon Road and parallel park along street (Map)

September 4th @ 5:00 PM – 9:30 PM:  Bonneville Shoreline Trail (10 Miles, Moderate/long) *

  • This longer hike along the Bonneville Shoreline Trail promises wonderful views and great exercise.
  • Head east (“up-canyon”) on Red Butte Canyon Road and park where the pavement turns to dirt. No parking at Red Butte Gardens, Natural History Museum of Utah, or the University of Utah School of Medicine lot. It is also possible to take Trax to the Fort Douglas Station and walk about half a mile to the meeting spot.
  • Bring a headlamp or flashlight! The hike will likely end about an hour after sunset.

September 14th @ 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM:  Parley’s Trail (10 Miles, flat but long) *

  • We will start at Sugarhouse Park and walk along the newly finished Parley’s trail to Parley’s Canyon and back.
  • Park and meet at the southeast parking lot of Sugarhouse Park (Map)

September 28th @ 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM:  Jordan River Parkway Trail (15 Miles, Flat but very long) *

  • This will be a long hike along the scenic Jordan River – perfect for conditioning or Scouts working towards their hiking merit badge.
  • Meet at 1850 N Redwood Road Parking Lot (Map)

October 2nd @ 5:30 PM -7:30 PM:  Mount Van Cott (2.2 Miles, Challenging)

  • This fun, challenging hike gains over 1,000 feet of elevation and offers unique views of the valley.
  • Parking: Head east (“up-canyon”) on Red Butte Canyon Road and park where the pavement turns to dirt. No parking at Red Butte Gardens, Natural History Museum of Utah, or the University of Utah School of Medicine lot. It is also possible to take Trax to the Fort Douglas Station and walk about half a mile to the meeting spot.

October 12th @ 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM:  Jordan River Parkway Trail (20 Miles, Flat but VERY long) *

  • This will be another long hike along the scenic Jordan River – perfect for conditioning or Scouts working towards their hiking merit badge.
  • Meet at 17th South River Park parking lot (Map).

October 16th @ 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM:  Ensign Peak (0.8 Miles, Beginner Friendly)

  • Join us in celebrating the last hike of the year with a raffle!
  • Ensign Peak is a must do, moderately sloped hike leading to an expansive, historical view of the Salt Lake Valley.
  • Meet at 1003 Ensign Vista Drive (Map).
