Life on State

Imagine State Street as a Place for People

How can we improve life on State? Salt Lake City and South Salt Lake are working together to study roadway improvements and development opportunities along the State Street corridor. The Life on State effort began in 2010 with a vision for a better street and a better experience for walking, growing a business, biking, building, riding transit, planting, driving, and living.

The draft Life on State Implementation Plan explores 4 major topics:

  1. Safety:  How can we work together to make State Street safer 24-7?
  2. Mobility:  How can we make State Street better for everyone traveling– by car, foot, transit?
  3. Business:  How can businesses unite to become a more successful and appealing district?
  4. Living:  How can State Street be more livable and human-scaled and help more people move into this neighborhood?

Why is the project needed?

State Street is a major transportation and business corridor with a history as Utah’s original state highway. But the street and neighborhood today have many challenges. There is potential for many positive shifts as today’s urban revitalization impacts this neighborhood. State Street can be a “Signature Street” that is a gateway to our capitol city and a safe, memorable destination of its own for people to enjoy and experience the city.

How can I contribute?

We want your help to identify short- and long-term strategies to address safety and security, create a sense of place, improve connectivity, optimize mobility, and drive economic prosperity on this vital urban thoroughfare. Can you imagine State Street as Utah’s “Signature Street?”

The draft plan is built on your ideas for a better street and details design tools, zoning recommendations, actions, and ideas for State Street. Read the draft plan. Answer our questionnaire. Better yet, join your fellow residents, employees, students, business owners and area stakeholders in Salt Lake City and South Salt Lake at a Call to Action workshop on April 30th.
