McClelland Street

The current McClelland Trail offers a safe and comfortable route for walking and bicycling between residential neighborhoods, recreational opportunities, shopping destinations, and community gathering places.

The first phase of the trail, between 800 South and the Sugar House Business District, was constructed from July to October of 2016. The final phase, McClelland Street from 2100 South to Sugarmont, is in the design phase.

Redesigning McClelland Street in Sugar House

Project Location

The Salt Lake City Transportation Division is developing options for re-designing McClelland Street between 2100 South and Sugarmont Drive. The goal is to identify the option that best meets the vision and goals from the Sugar House Master Plan, and which are supported by the Sugar House Circulation Plan, the Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan, and the Jordan and Salt Lake City Canal Trail Implementation Plan.


Existing Conditions on McClelland Street

Options include:

1. Maintain Existing Layout, shown above

  • Two-way vehicular traffic
  • Parallel parking on both sides of the street, totaling 54 spaces
  • Standard-width (5-foot) sidewalks with park strips
  • Bikes use either the sidewalk or the vehicle travel lanes on the street

2. Circulation Plan Recommendation (click for illustration – opens in a new window)

  • One lane in each direction for vehicular traffic
  • Two-way bike path on the east side of the road
  • Parallel parking remains on the west side of the road
  • Paralelle parking removed from east side of the road
  • Retains 26 spaces of the 54 spaces currently on the street
  • Standard-width (5-foot) sidewalks with park strips

3. One-Way Layout (click for illustration – opens in a new window)

  • One-way southbound vehicular traffic from 2100 South to Elm Street
  • Two-way vehicular traffic between Elm Street and Sugarmont Drive
  • Two-way bike path on the east side of the road
  • Angle parking on the west side of the road between 2100 South and Elm Street
  • Parallel parking on the west side of the road between Elm Street and Sugarmont Drive
  • A total of 39 on-street parking stalls would remain, compared to 54 currently

4. Shared Street Layout (click for illustration – opens in a new window)

  • Street paving that creates a plaza-like environment
  • Parallel parking on both sides of the street
  • On-street parking would be reduced by between 4 and 14 spaces
  • Large planting areas for vegetation and stormwater capture
  • Street furniture and amenities including benches, artwork, signage, and bike racks
