Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Salt Lake and Salt Lake City partner to restore afterschool services in Glendale

November 6, 2025

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Salt Lake and Salt Lake City entered into a collaborative partnership to bring youth afterschool programming back to Glendale for this school year after the closure of Club programming in August.

On October 27, Salt Lake City’s Youth and Families Division, moved its YouthCity Fairpark K-6 afterschool program into the Lied Boys & Girls Club, located at 464 S. Concord Street. The building is once again a hub for youth connection, learning, and community.

“Every child deserves a safe, enriching place to go after school, and every parent deserves the peace of mind that brings,” said Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall. “I’m grateful to the Boys & Girls Clubs for their collaboration and commitment to keeping this building—and its purpose—alive for our west side.”

As part of the partnership, YouthCity reserved some registration spots for youth that lost afterschool programming after the recent closure of the Lied Club.

“When we announced the closure of the Lied Club, our first priority was ensuring Glendale families still had access to safe, enriching environments for their kids after school,” said Amanda Ree Gardner, President and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Salt Lake. “This partnership with YouthCity is a creative and compassionate solution that keeps youth connected to caring mentors and essential services in their own neighborhood. Moreover, it’s an example of how public entities and community-based organizations can work together to find creative solutions that meet the needs of the kids and families in our neighborhoods.”

After the Lied Club closure earlier this year many families and alumni described Boys & Girls Clubs as a “lifesaver” for working parents and a “safe haven” for children needing structured, supportive environments after school. Together with YouthCity, the pair aims to provide the same quality care.

“YouthCity is thrilled to welcome Glendale families using the Lied Club,” said Youth and Family Division Director Elizabeth Rich. “Together, we’re providing kids with a supportive and safe environment where they can connect and learn new skills.”

While the arrangement is temporary for the 2025–2026 school year, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Salt Lake remains committed to exploring all possible opportunities to establish a long-term Boys & Girls Club presence in Glendale.

The organization continues to seek funding partners and community collaborators to make that possible.
