600/700 North reconstruction slated to begin in Salt Lake City, community invited to meet with contractors

April 11, 2025

Construction on 600/700 North between Redwood Road and 800 West in Salt Lake City is anticipated to start this month, and residents are encouraged to attend an open house, featuring a bike rodeo, where they can learn about the project timeline and its impacts.

The project will replace pavement and maintain the life of the road, add curb-protected bike lanes, new crosswalks, trees, and upgrade sidewalks.

“We are excited to talk to the community about the investments being made with this project and the benefits it will bring to the neighborhood,” said Megan Leether, Salt Lake City Project Engineer. “By maintaining the existing travel lanes, we keep capacity and avoid congestion for drivers, adding high-comfort bike lanes provides safe and comfortable access for riders of all ages and abilities, and new trees will provide shade and beauty for current and future generations.”

The open house with contractors will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16, at Backman Elementary School, located at 601 N. 1500 West. This fun event will feature information about construction schedules, phasing, and impacts. Spanish-speaking team members will be on hand to answer questions.

Bike Utah and Salt Lake City will host a bike rodeo, which gives kids a chance to ride through a specially designed course to learn bike safety skills. A raffle will be held for a new adult bike and several children’s bikes, along with helmets and bike lights. Refreshments from The Other Side Donuts will be provided.

In addition to the City’s road improvements, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) and Salt Lake City are working together to rebuild the Jordan River Bridge at 650 North. This work is critical to maintaining the life of the bridge and preparing it to withstand future earthquakes and flood events. The bridge work is anticipated to begin this year and last up to eight months. A detour will be in place during bridge reconstruction.

Travelers are encouraged to visit the project website, www.600northslc.org, for additional information and to sign up for project updates. Residents can contact the project team at 600North@slc.gov and 801-618-1003 with questions.
