Overview
Salt Lake City will rebuild L Street from 5th Avenue to 12th Avenue to replace worn pavement and improve safety and accessibility for people walking, biking, and driving. Construction is expected to begin in summer 2026.
Note: Between 7th Avenue and 8th Avenue, work will be limited to storm drain improvements since the roadway was recently reconstructed. Between 9th Avenue and 10th Avenue, no repaving or curb ramp work is planned.
Improvements include
- Repairs to sidewalks, curbs, gutters, curb ramps, and driveway approaches as needed
- Adding missing sidewalk on the east side of L Street between 10th Avenue and 11th Avenue
- A bus boarding platform at the 11th Avenue eastbound bus stop
- Curb extensions at the 12th Avenue intersection to improve the safety of the crosswalk to Ensign Elementary School
What to expect during construction
During construction, residents can expect temporary closures and detours. Updates will be shared as work progresses.
What do these improvements do?
Make intersections safer and easier to cross
Curb extensions (sometimes called bulb-outs) extend the sidewalk at intersections. This shortens the distance people need to cross the street, improves visibility between people walking and people driving, and tightens the turning radius at corners, which encourages slower turning movements. At L Street and 12th Avenue, curb extensions will help improve safety at the crosswalk to Ensign Elementary School.
Improve access to the bus
Bus boarding platforms provide a dedicated space for people to wait for and board the bus. These platforms allow buses to stay in the travel lane while passengers board at sidewalk level, making boarding faster and more comfortable, especially for people using mobility devices, strollers, or bikes. This also helps buses stay on schedule.
Fill sidewalk gaps
Missing sidewalk on the east side of L Street between 10th Avenue and 11th Avenue will be added, creating a more continuous and accessible walking route.
