Support from Salt Lake City energizes a new kind of wellness at Cold Plunge Coffee

May 13, 2025

The Salt Lake City Council recently approved a $100,000 Economic Development Loan Fund (EDLF) loan for Cold Plunge Coffee, a new café and cold plunge business located at 457 E. 300 South, Suite D.

Cold Plunge Coffee, which opened in March, blends two daily rituals: coffee and cold baths into one unique wellness-focused destination. With espresso, brews, and 40-degree plunges, Cold Plunge Coffee is redefining the meaning of recharge, right in the heart of Salt Lake City.

“It’s always exciting to see a new business that makes you think, ‘I’ve never seen anything like this before,’,” said Mayor Erin Mendenhall. “Cold Plunge Coffee is inviting us to rethink how we take care of ourselves and connect with each other, and that’s the kind of bold thinking Salt Lake City thrives on.”

Founded by a team with roots in Seattle’s coffee scene, Cold Plunge Coffee offers a full menu of craft beverages alongside a space to recover, reset, and reenergize through cold water immersion.

“Cold Plunge Coffee is more than just a café—it’s a fresh take on wellness and community,” said Council Member Eva Lopez Chavez of District 4. “It’s exciting to see entrepreneurs introducing creative spaces that help people feel their best while also adding to the unique character of our city.”

Working with the Business Development division of the Department of Economic Development, Cold Plunge Coffee received a $100,000 EDLF loan to assist with:

  • The buildout of their new location
  • The purchase of specialized cold plunge tubs

“Cold Plunge Coffee brings together health, hospitality, and creativity in a totally original way,” said Lorena Riffo Jenson, Director of Salt Lake City’s Department of Economic Development. “This is exactly the kind of forward-thinking entrepreneurship the EDLF is designed to support.”

The EDLF’s purpose is to stimulate business development and expansion, create employment opportunities, encourage private investment, promote economic development, and enhance neighborhood vitality and commercial enterprise in Salt Lake City by making loans available to businesses. The program’s overarching goal is to invest in viable businesses that produce strong economic returns and also provide positive social and environmental impacts. Learn more here
