SALT LAKE CITY, May 12, 2026 – In response to a resident’s inquiry about Eva Lopez Chavez’ principal place of residence, the City Attorney and Recorder’s Office conducted an investigation and determined her ineligibility to continue as the District Four Salt Lake City Council Member. The inquiry was in response to a District Four resident who raised the question with the City Attorney’s Office. The Council respects the legal process that was followed in making the determination, and given the clear State Code the vacancy is effective immediately.
While the City is in the midst of annual budget briefings, it is a reminder of the important role Council Members fill. Our focus is on ensuring a smooth transition, maintaining representation for District Four residents, and following the procedures outlined in City Code to address the vacancy. The timeline to fill the vacant seat is 30 days, and more information will be released as soon as possible. In the meantime, residents from District Four should continue to share your input and questions through the normal channels, for the Council to consider in discussions and decisions.
We appreciate the work of the Recorder’s Office in expeditiously carrying out its formal responsibilities in a professional manner.
Any questions related to the review and vacancy determination should be directed to the City Recorder’s Office.
