Ida M. Cotten Park to close for upgrades

Aug. 17, 2026

Salt Lake City’s Department of Public Lands will temporarily close Ida M. Cotten Park (1815 S. 300 East) on Monday, August 17, to start construction on a series of improvements designed to better serve the neighborhood and create a more welcoming space. The park will fully reopen in Spring 2027.

The improvements reflect the priorities identified through two rounds of public engagement, where residents shared a desire for more swings, shade, improved safety, and tree preservation.

Planned improvements include:

  • A new playground
  • Improved walkways and circulation
  • New plantings and irrigation
  • Park lighting to enhance safety and visibility

“Ida Cotten Park’s improvements will create a more vibrant space while preserving its mature trees and character,” said Dustin Wiberg, Senior Landscape Architect for the Department of Public Lands. “These upgrades will help strengthen the park as a beloved community gathering place for years to come.”

Named in honor of Ida M. Cotten, a longtime Salt Lake City resident who raised her children as a single mother in a home once located on the property, the park has deep roots in the neighborhood. The project is funded from the Parks, Trails, and Open Space General Obligation Bond, which was overwhelmingly approved by voters in 2022.

While the park is under construction, visitors are encouraged to visit nearby parks such as Liberty Park (600 E. Harvey Milk Blvd.), Herman Franks Park (1351 S. 700 East), Westminster Park (986 E. 1700 South), or Fairmont Park (1030 S. Sugarmont Dr.).
