August 2021 declared as Back-to-School Month in SLC

WHEREAS, the month of August is observed as National Back-to-School Month; and

WHEREAS, we recognize the dedication, courage, and resiliency of our students, teachers, schools, families, communities, and employees who have all faced unprecedented challenges presented by COVID-19 over the last year and a half; and

WHEREAS, we praise the efforts of our educators and administrators who have risen to these challenges with great care and ingenuity, serving as both educators and technical support to their students and parents, while managing to adapt lesson plans, preserve extracurricular activities, and keep tabs on the development and emotional wellbeing of their students; and

WHEREAS, we applaud the flexibility and patience of our parents, guardians, and families for balancing the responsibilities of employment, childcare, and learning in a show of resolute support for their students’ wellbeing and academic progress; and

WHEREAS, Salt Lake City is fortunate to house students from the Salt Lake City School District, Salt Lake Community College, and University of Utah campuses within our city boundaries; and  

WHEREAS, we encourage all Salt Lake City students, families, and employees to gear up for National Back-to-School Month by discussing a COVID-19 safety plan and campus, school bus, bicycle, and pedestrian safety; and

WHEREAS, we also strongly encourage families with school children and students ages 12 and older to get vaccinated.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Erin Mendenhall, Mayor of Salt Lake City, proclaim August 2021 as:
