WHEREAS, individual preparedness for emergencies is the foundation of community resiliency and vital for recovery after disasters that could happen at any time; and
WHEREAS, community shared understanding of the possible risks they can face, needs, and capabilities, empowers neighborhoods to engage in emergency preparedness leading to a more efficient use of existing resources. In this past year, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic put into perspective the unpredictability of disasters and how far-reaching their impact can be; and
WHEREAS, over recent months, Salt Lake City experienced unprecedented earthquakes, floods, windstorms, and wildland fires resulting in residential, business, and other structural damages, reminding us of the importance of individual and family preparedness; and
WHEREAS, in honor of this year’s theme, “Prepare to Protect. Preparing for disasters is protecting everyone you love,” we encourage all residents, businesses, and employees to align their preparedness planning with the weekly themes, which include: making a plan with friends and family; building or updating a kit with supplies that will last at least 96 hours for all members of the household, including pets; preparing for disasters by knowing the risk of disasters in your area, learning how to reinforce your home, and checking your insurance coverage; and, finally, teaching youth about preparedness by involving them in discussions about emergencies, the role they play, and what to do in case of separation; and
WHEREAS, to learn more about emergency preparedness, including accessing information and resources on how to make an emergency preparedness plan, what to include in a kit, how to get involved in the community, and ways to stay informed, visit our city’s webpage bereadyslc.com.
