WHEREAS, Transgender Day of Visibility is observed and celebrated internationally on March 31st; and
WHEREAS, this day was founded in 2009 by activist Rachel Crandall to raise awareness about the discrimination faced by the transgender community, as well as to celebrate the accomplishments, resilience, and contributions of transgender people everywhere; and
WHEREAS, members of the transgender community are often underrepresented and made to feel as though they should hide their identities, but this day is meant to make gender diverse individuals feel seen, welcome, and safe; and
WHEREAS, in light of the State Legislature recently passing legislation that aims to target and exclude transgender students, it is especially critical that we as a City come together to uplift our transgender community, not put them down or cast them out; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor’s Office is committed to advocating for the rights, dignity, and equality for transgender and gender diverse people everywhere. It is our belief that this commitment should be one that is shared by us all.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Erin Mendenhall, Mayor of Salt Lake City, proclaim March 31, 2022, as:
