Mayor Mendenhall declares January 4, 2023, Braille Day in SLC

WHEREAS, January 4 is observed as World Braille Day to raise awareness for the importance of braille as a mode of communication for the blind and visually impaired community; and

WHEREAS, the observance honors the birth of braille’s inventor, Louis Braille, who created the communication method in 1824 at the age of 15; and

WHEREAS, we are thankful for and appreciate the efforts of the National Federation of the Blind of Utah for all that they do to empower and advocate for the blind community across the state, including their Braille Enrichment for Literacy and Learning (BELL) program; and

WHEREAS, our Salt Lake City Accessibility and Disability Commission regularly reviews issues that create opportunities for full inclusion of those who are blind or visually impaired, such as requiring signage in braille that identifies rooms or spaces in public City buildings; and

WHEREAS, Salt Lake City continues efforts to improve and educate the public on citywide accessibility efforts being made to ensure our City is a place where individuals who are blind or visually impaired not only have access to appropriate literacy and vocational options but have equitable opportunities to enjoy what our community has to offer.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Erin Mendenhall, Mayor of Salt Lake City, proclaim January 4, 2023, as:
