WHEREAS, January 27 is observed as International Holocaust Remembrance Day, marking the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau; and
WHEREAS, Salt Lake City honors the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust, as well as all other victims of Nazism, and acknowledges the generational devastation that the genocide had on the Jewish community; and
WHEREAS, we also stand in admiration of the Jewish people for their demonstration of unwavering resiliency, courage, determination, and love in the face of deeply seeded hate and racial injustice; and
WHEREAS, we also pay tribute to the individuals who endangered their own lives by sheltering fleeing Jewish families; and
WHEREAS, we must never forget the events that took place during the Holocaust and encourage efforts to protect the teachings of the Holocaust and other significant historical events fueled by racism; and
WHEREAS, Salt Lake City is grateful for the presence and contributions of our local Jewish community. Some of these Salt Lakers are not only survivors of the Holocaust but living with us today, and we are grateful to have their vast wisdom and positive guidance.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Erin Mendenhall, Mayor of Salt Lake City, proclaim January 27, 2023, as:
