WHEREAS, autism is a complex neurological condition that affects individuals in varying ways, and is now understood to be a part of the natural diversity of human experience; and
WHEREAS, autism affects approximately 1 in 54 individuals in the United States, including many in our own community; and
WHEREAS, individuals with autism often face challenges related to communication, social interaction, and sensory processing, which can impact their daily lives and require unique support and accommodations; and
WHEREAS, Autism Acceptance Month is a time to recognize the strengths and unique abilities of individuals with autism, and to promote understanding, acceptance, and inclusion of all individuals in our community; and
WHEREAS, Salt Lake City extends its appreciation to our local organizations who support and provide services to and education about the autism community, including the Utah Autism Foundation, Autism Council of Utah, and the Utah Parent Center; and
WHEREAS, we are proud of efforts undertaken by ourSalt Lake City Police, Fire and 911 Dispatch departments to gain a broader understanding of invisible disabilities, including autism, through recent Invisible Disability training provided by Kulture City; and
WHEREAS, we encourage residents to support and embrace the diversity of individuals with autism and promote inclusive environments for our autistic community and provide equitable opportunities for all people to achieve the highest possible quality of life.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Erin Mendenhall, Mayor of Salt Lake City, proclaim April 2022, as:
