WHEREAS, public libraries are cornerstones of democracy, promoting the free exchange of ideas and equal access to information for all members of the community; and
WHEREAS, public libraries provide vital resources and services that enrich the lives of individuals, families, and communities by offering a wide range of materials, including books, magazines, and digital resources, as well as educational programs and community events; and
WHEREAS, public libraries have adapted and innovated to meet the changing needs of their communities, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, by offering digital resources, virtual programming, and curbside services; and
WHEREAS, Public Library Week provides an opportunity to recognize the valuable contributions that public libraries and library workers make to our society; and
WHEREAS, Salt Lake Cityis grateful for the presence, engagement, and partnership of the Salt Lake City Library and its staff; and
WHEREAS, the Salt Lake City Public Library system has been serving our community since 1898 and includes the Main, Anderson-Foothill, Chapman, Corrine & Jack Sweet, Day-Riverside, Glendale, Marmalade, and Sprague libraries; and
WHEREAS, we extend our thanks to local community organizations who spearhead advocacy, volunteering, and fundraising efforts in support of the library, including The Friends of the Salt Lake City Library; and
WHEREAS, we invite residents to join us in celebrating the important role that public libraries play in promoting literacy, lifelong learning, and the common good, and to fully support and utilize their local public library resources to the fullest extent possible.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Erin Mendenhall, Mayor of Salt Lake City, proclaim April 23-29, 2023, as:
