Mayor Jackie Biskupski’s statement on Director for the Department of Public Utilities

Mayor Jackie Biskupski released the following statement regarding her choice of Director for the Department of Public Utilities:

Today, Mayor Jackie Biskupski announced Mike Reberg will be appointed to lead Salt Lake City’s Department of Public Utilities, filling a vacancy created upon the departure of Jeff Niermeyer in December. Mike Reberg will start in his new role on February 1, 2016.

“In selecting the Director of Public Utilities, I was focused on finding an individual with a high degree of management experience in the public sector, a proven record of environmental stewardship, and a demonstrated commitment to customer service,” said Mayor Biskupski on her selection. “Mike’s twenty-years of management experience, both at the county level and with Congressman Jim Matheson, coupled with his passion for the environment, in particular his years of expertise in Wasatch watershed preservation, make him an ideal choice to lead the department charged with providing our city with clean drinking water and street lighting in an environmentally sensitive manner.”

Mike Reberg has spent his professional career managing complex organizations in local and federal government. For eight years, Mike served as the Assistant Director of Public Works for Salt Lake County, followed by several years in private practice where he helped negotiate land exchanges with Salt Lake County, resulting in the expansion of a local river parkway system. In 2003, Mike was selected by Congressman Jim Matheson as District Director, charged with managing all aspects of personnel, constituent services, and communications for the geographically and politically diverse 2nd Congressional District. In 2013, Mike began working as the Division Director for the nationally renowned Salt Lake County Animal Services, the state’s largest “no-kill” animal shelter, with an annual operating budget of $6,000,000 and a staff of over 70 employees. Mike is currently serving on the Board of Directors of Save our Canyons.

“It’s an honor to have been selected by Mayor Biskupski to fill this important role. It’s clear to anyone who has worked with the Mayor she has a deep commitment to ensuring government works for the people,” said Mike Reberg on his appointment. “As the Director, I am committed to creating an environment where the talented and intelligent individuals who work for the Department of Public Utilities can thrive, and where a commitment to customer service is paramount in decisions we make.”

Mike was raised in Ogden, attended Utah State University and currently lives in the Liberty Park area with his two rescue dogs.
