Phase one of the stone repair work for the Salt Lake City and County Building has been successfully completed on the upper tower. Scaffolding removal is scheduled to commence on November 14 and will take around two weeks to complete. This is part of a three-year program to restore building’s stone facade, repair windows, and perform a seismic upgrade of the historic building.

The work completed during the summer included, removal of two tons of stone and debris, crack repair, and mortar patching. Approximately 350 stones on the upper tower balconies, along with heavily deteriorated pieces throughout the tower were replaced. New metal flashing was also installed in areas to protect the stone, over time this new flashing will patina or darken in color. Additional work included repair and repainting of all window frames and sills and the tower clock faces.

In preparation for the next phase of the project on the base of the building, work including stone scarping will continue during the winter months utilizing mobile lifts. Stonemasons will also begin shaping and carving new stone replacement pieces at an offsite facility. Scaffolding on the lower south and west faces of the building will be installed in mid-February 2017 to allow for repair and replacement work to being in March 2017.

In conjunction with the prep work, seismic improvements to the foundation system in the basement will continue through the winter months, with an estimated completion date of April 2017.

“It is clear the team working on the restoration is doing so with a level of care which should be afforded to such an iconic building,” said Mayor Jackie Biskupski on the update. “Everyone at City Hall is pleased to see the project moving forward on schedule and we are looking forward to a rejuvenated tower once again anchoring the City skyline.”
