Salt Lake City YouthCity hosting Healthy Harvest event at Liberty Park Market

Salt Lake City’s YouthCity program will host Healthy Harvest, a family-friendly, health event at Liberty Park, on Friday, September 21 from 5-7 p.m. The free activity will offer face painting, nutrition demonstration, YouthCity recipe competition and information about LDS Hospital’s Produce Bucks program and YouthCity programs.

Healthy Harvest is part of an ongoing YouthCity health curriculum called “Commit to Health,” which is funded by a National Recreation and Parks Association grant for increased access to exercise, nutritious foods and natural environments. Participating kids will put their Commit to Health knowledge into action at the Liberty Park Market through a produce-themed scavenger hunt. The LDS Hospital Produce Bucks will be used towards produce purchases from local farmers and YouthCity meal vouchers will be provided to make nutritious purchases from prepared food vendors at the market.

“Our kids go home from YouthCity with tons of information about making healthy lifestyle choices,” said Elizabeth Rich, YouthCity associate director. “Healthy Harvest is a great opportunity for the kids’ friends and family members to see them using these skills and participate in healthy shopping and cooking together.”

YouthCity is a Salt Lake City program serving young people ages 8-19 with out-of-school opportunities to develop social, emotional and life skills in an inclusive and caring environment at eight sites within the City. Youth enjoy fun and educational activities year-round.

The Liberty Park Market is an ideal partner for the Healthy Harvest event. Every Friday evening from June to October, the Liberty Park Market offers affordable seasonal produce that can be purchased using Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) and Double Up Food Bucks (DUFB). Buying from local vendors promotes community pride, economic vitality and healthy eating. Liberty Park Market attendees are welcome to visit the Healthy Harvest event, where they can learn about nutrition and health from YouthCity participants and gain information about YouthCity programs.
