Traffic access to medical campus prioritized with two lanes uphill throughout construction 

Construction on 100 South between University Street and North Campus Drive is expected to begin Monday, May 5, near the University of Utah to replace aging pavement and improve safety for all road users.

Work is planned to start after the majority of the university’s commencement and convocations are complete and is expected to end before the fall semester begins in mid-August. 

“It’s important that we ensure safe, reliable access to our world-class medical institutions on the University of Utah campus—University Hospital, Primary Children’s Hospital, and Huntsman Cancer Institute,” said Mayor Erin Mendenhall. “Improving 100 South will help save lives, support families in crisis, and ensure every resident, healthcare worker, and visitor can reach these critical facilities safely and easily.” 

To maintain efficient access to these medical facilities, 100 South will be limited to two eastbound (uphill) traffic lanes only. No westbound access will be allowed on 100 South during construction. Patients and staff leaving the medical and academic campuses will be detoured to Mario Capecchi Drive. Access to the University of Utah campus will remain available, and all drivers not seeking medical care are strongly encouraged to avoid 100 South and take an alternate route during construction.

“The University of Utah appreciates the thoughtful planning and close coordination between Salt Lake City and our healthcare institutions to maintain critical access for patients and caregivers throughout the summer,” said Chris Nelson, Chief University of Utah Relations Officer. “These efforts will allow our dedicated healthcare staff as well as our campus employees, students and visitors to continue accessing campus as they need to during the construction.”
