What does “Para” mean?
The prefix “para-” comes from the Greek para (παρά), meaning “beside” or “alongside.” In this context, it means the international competition for elite athletes with disabilities is held alongside the world’s other major global sporting festival—parallel in timing and stature.
What is Para sport?
Para sport brings together elite athletes with physical, visual, and intellectual impairments competing at the highest international level. The six sports include Para snowboarding, Para alpine skiing, sled hockey, Para cross country skiing, Para biathlon, and wheelchair curling. Athletes compete in classifications that ensure fair and exciting competition.
Why are Para sport competitions important?
Sports for people with impairments have existed for more than a century and people with disabilities have always been part of our communities. Para sport competitions shift the focus from disability to ability, celebrating excellence while advancing accessibility and opportunity for all.

Field Trips
Engaging youth is a core part of how we are preparing for the Salt Lake City, Utah 2034 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. The students in our classrooms today will be the volunteers, leaders, innovators, and fans who help shape that moment. This watch party is an early step in that journey, an opportunity to spark curiosity, build understanding of the Games’ legacy in Utah, and invite students into a shared civic experience.
