Salt Lake City is entering the final year of voter-approved Funding Our Future street projects.
Multiple projects will be kicking off in April, including 1300 East; 2100 South to Elgin Avenue and 600 North; 800 West to Redwood Road, as well as the final phases of the 2100 South; 700 East to 1300 East and 300 North; 300 West to 1000 West projects.
Additional projects planned this summer include the reconstruction of 100 South, University Street to North Campus Drive, 400 South Viaduct Trail, 300 West Bikeway, and more than a dozen local streets that will receive pavement improvements.
Approved by voters in 2018, the $87 million Funding Our Future Streets Reconstruction Bond projects have improved more than 65 major and local streets, addressing more than 20% of the City’s “poor to failed” pavement in the last five years. Locations were chosen based on pavement conditions, rotating through all seven city districts. Many of these projects also included elements to improve safety for all travel modes.
“We’ve made a lot of progress, and we’re happy to let Salt Lake City travelers know that major impacts are winding down,” said Salt Lake City Engineer Mark Stephens. “When we’re done this year, we’ll have rebuilt some of the most traveled major routes throughout the city.”
These projects underscore Salt Lake City’s dedication to creating safer, more accessible streets and prioritizing the needs of all residents. While replacing aged infrastructure and degraded pavement, Salt Lake City has also added safety improvements and features that make it easier for people to get around without a car.
So far, these projects have added nearly 20 miles of improved bicycle and pedestrian facilities, dozens of new or improved pedestrian crossings, better drainage, and new underground utilities like sewer and water lines.
“Meet the Contractor” open houses are planned for the 1300 East and 600 North projects in April. The 1300 East project open house will be held on April 10 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Highland High School. Local residents and businesses are encouraged to attend to learn more about construction schedules and impacts. More information about the individual projects is available online at https://www.slc.gov/mystreet/reconstructions/.
