Twelve of 27 City-led actions now complete and ongoing; progress highlighted in newly published report
July 16, 2025
Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall and Salt Lake City Police Department Chief Brian Redd provided a six-month update on the City’s Public Safety Plan, outlining major milestones reached and reaffirming the City’s commitment to long-term safety and systemic change.
“We are not letting a broken system prevent us from fixing the pieces we control. We are not letting a lack of space in the shelter system mean a lack of effort on our part,” said Mayor Mendenhall. “And perhaps most importantly, we are not allowing short-term wins to distract us from the long-term work ahead. Because we are not finished—not even close.”
Since the plan’s release in January 2025, 12 of the 27 City-led actions have been completed and are now ongoing, with the remaining 15 in progress. The Public Safety Plan July 2025 Update, released today, outlines these efforts and is available to view at slc.gov/publicsafetyplan/.
Both Mayor Mendenhall and Chief Redd also expressed optimism over the newly launched Project CONNECT—a cross-agency initiative to divert high utilizers of the justice system into treatment to relieve strain on resources. More information will be available as the project continues to be implemented.
