Serving Beer and/or Alcohol

To serve beer or alcohol within your place of business, you must get a license from both Salt Lake City and the State of Utah, Department of Alcohol Beverage Service (DABS). The DABS will require a signed local consent form from the City and a copy of your Business License Certificate.

Need to know

  • Cost is based on the type of Local Consent you have obtained from the DABS.
    • Retail Alcohol/Beer will be $394.00 annual, per license.
    • Restaurant will be $311.00 annual, per license.
    • Bar or Tavern will be $441.00 annual, per license.
    • Single Event will be $311.00 annual, per license.
    • Microbrew pub will be $311.00 annual, per license.
    • Recreational facility beer will be $394.00 annual, per license.
    • Banquets/Catering will be $302.00 annual, per license.
    • Reception/Event Center will be $310.00 annual, per license.
    • Bar Establishments will be $554.00 annual per business.
  • If you do not get a license from the City to serve beer or alcohol within your place of business, you may be subject to enforcement action and penalties.

Before you start

  • Contact the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Services (DABS) to determine what type of license you will need.
  • You will receive a Local Consent form for which our office will complete and send back to the DABS when you have met our office’s requirements.

Steps

2. Submit your application.

Complete the online business license application.

Or, if you prefer, you can:

  • Schedule an appointment with the business licensing office.
  • At the time of you appointment, come into our office for assistance filling out the online application at a kiosk.

3. Business license officer review.

  • A business license officer will review your application within 3 business days.
  • After all required documents are uploaded, you will receive an email to pay the licensing fee.

4. Pay licensing fees.

Fees are based on the type of Local Consent you have obtained from the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Services.

What’s next

  • A business license officer will review your application within 3 business days.
  • After all required documents are uploaded, you will receive an email to pay the licensing fee.
  • After the licensing fee is paid, you will receive an email with instructions on scheduling required inspections.
  • The business license office has 30 days to approve or deny a license.
