What is Title VI?
In July 1964 Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Title VI of the Civil Rights Act states that “No person in the United States shall, on the ground of race, color, or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.
Title VI prohibits recipients of federal financial assistance (e.g., states, universities, local governments) from discriminating on the basis of race, color, or national origin (which extends to the language(s) people speak) in any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.
Salt Lake City Corporation is committed to full compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and all related regulations, laws, executive orders, and directives. It is the express policy of the City that no person shall be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or otherwise subjected to discrimination on the grounds of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or creed in conjunction with any program, activity, or benefit offered by SLC, as provided by Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and related statutes.
