To conserve resources and reduce air pollution, Salt Lake City’s Waste & Recycling Division (formerly Sanitation Division) will temporarily suspend the collection of brown yard waste cans from January 23 through March 10, 2017.
Demand for yard waste collection is low at this time, and suspending services will result in:
- An estimated fuel savings of 5,234 gallons and $10,000.
- The elimination of 856 pounds of criteria air pollutants and over 117,600 pounds of CO2-equivalent
- A reduction in greenhouse gas emissions equivalent of removing 13 passenger vehicles from the road for an entire year
“Only one percent of curbside compost cans are set out for collection in the winter,” said Mayor Jackie Biskupski. “Halting collection for six weeks is a simple way to conserve city resources and make sure we’re doing everything we can to reduce air pollution.”
Compost can collection will start back up the week of Monday March 13, 2017.
Residents who have remaining autumn yard waste for disposal are encouraged to call Waste and Recycling as soon as possible to request an extra leaves-only to be used before the suspension.
HOLIDAY TREES
Residents are encouraged to dispose of their holiday trees no later than their collection day the week of Monday, January 16.
Ornaments and lights must be removed. Flocked trees are not accepted.
Residents are requested to cut trees into several pieces, which accommodates an easier fit into the brown compost cans.
“Trees that are forced into the brown bins, or that are not cut up into pieces, can be problematic for fitting into trucks and for disposal,” said Vicki Bennett, Sustainability Department director.
However, residents who cannot cut their trees are encouraged to place them curbside for collection and asked not to overfill the brown bin.
Finally, there will be no change to Salt Lake City’s curbside collection schedule during the holidays (Dec. 26, 2016 and Jan. 2, 2017).
