Report or request service to Clean City

Abandoned personal belongings: Report

If you see personal belongings that appear to be abandoned—like backpacks, tents, or clothing—you can let the City know by submitting a report. These items are usually things a person could carry on their own.

When you make a report, please include as much of the following information as you can:

  • The location of the abandoned items
  • A short description of the area where they are
  • A photo of the items or the location

Once the report is submitted, the City will review it and decide whether the area needs to be cleaned. After the area is cleaned, the report will be marked as complete.

If you notice more abandoned items later, feel free to submit another report.

Encampment: Report

If you see a homeless encampment in Salt Lake City, you can submit a report. A homeless encampment is any place where one or more people are sleeping in tents or makeshift structures.

When making a report, please include as much of the following information as you can:

  • The location of the camp
  • A short description (optional)
  • A photo (optional)

Once a report is received, the City reviews it and decides what steps to take. This may include visiting the site, offering services to those staying there, cleaning the area, or doing an Encampment Impact Mitigation (EIM) in partnership with Salt Lake County.

Outreach teams first visit the camp to offer help and connect people to services. After that, the City will either clean the site or coordinate a larger response if needed.

Once the encampment is cleared or cleaned, the report will be closed. If new concerns come up, you’re welcome to submit another report.

Graffiti removal: Report

Salt Lake City works to clean up graffiti within 24 business hours of receiving a report. Graffiti that is offensive or inappropriate is given the highest priority.

Please note:

  • In the winter, snow removal may delay cleanup by up to 72 hours.
  • If a property has a “No Trespassing” sign, we must get the owner’s permission before removing graffiti.

We cannot remove graffiti from the following:

  • Vehicles
  • Speed limit or traffic signs
  • “For lease” or “For sale” signs
  • Stucco surfaces
  • Unsafe locations (over 20 feet high, building ledges, or active fire zones)
  • Temporary items (like cones, construction signs, fencing, barricades, or walkways)

When you report graffiti, please include:

  • The exact location
  • A short description of the graffiti
  • A photo of the graffiti and the area

If the graffiti is on property managed by UTA or UDOT, please contact those agencies directly.

If the graffiti is outside of Salt Lake City limits, contact the Unified Police Department Graffiti Removal Program at (385) 468-9769 or email graffiti@updsl.org. You can also use the graffiti directory below for more information.

Illegal dumping: Report

Salt Lake City cleans up illegal dumping on public property within city limits.

Illegal dumping is when someone leaves trash, yard waste, or other materials in a public space without permission. These items are usually too large, heavy, or unsafe to pick up without special equipment or training.

To report illegal dumping, please submit a request with the following details:

  • The location of the dumped items
  • A brief description of what was dumped
  • Your name
  • Your phone number (in case we need more information)

Once we have the information, our team will clean it up as soon as possible. Cleanup times may vary depending on the situation.

Needles or human waste: Report hazards

If you see human biowaste (like urine, feces, vomit, or blood) or used needles in a public area in Salt Lake City, you can report it so the City can arrange for cleanup.

When reporting, please include as much of the following as you can:

  • The location of the waste or needles
  • A short description of the area (optional)
  • A photo of the area (optional)

The City will review the report and schedule cleanup based on what and where the issue is. Once the cleanup is complete, the report will be marked as closed.

If you see new concerns, please submit another report.
