The Small Claims section of the Salt Lake City Justice Court helps people resolve money-related disputes. These cases often involve contracts, services, or other simple claims. Small Claims cases follow Utah Code title 78A, Chapter 8. and the, Utah Rules of Small Claims Procedure.
Most Small Claims hearings are held online through WebEx. Please email [email protected] your current email address and phone number so we can send you the link for your hearing.
How to File and Prepare for Court
Verify jurisdiction
- A case must be filed in the place where the defendant lives or where the claim began. This means you should file in the location where the events took place.
- Jurisdiction map. Click on Basemap then select County Basemap, if you get an error message, click okay, the map will still open.
File your case
- After you confirm that the Salt Lake City Justice Court has jurisdiction over your case, access Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) forms. To file your case, you must send your forms to the Salt Lake City Justice Court with the required filing fees. You may also email your forms to [email protected]. Make sure your contact information is included so we can reach you for payment.
- If you received an exemption from using ODR because of a disability, language barrier, or no internet access, you may use the regular forms and file your case directly with the court.
Mediation
- If your case qualifies for an ODR exemption, Utah Dispute Resolution can help if you want mediation. They are available at the start of each court session to help mediate Small Claims cases.

If English is not your main language and you cannot understand or speak English well, the court will provide an interpreter for all your hearings. You must request an interpreter at least 3 days before your hearing, or your hearing may need to be rescheduled. To request an interpreter, you can call the court at (801) 535‑6300 or email [email protected], so we can schedule one for your hearing.

Audio Request
If you had a court hearing and want a copy of the recording, please fill out an Audio Records Request. After you complete the form, turn it in to the court. The cost is $15.00 for each disc or for each half day of testimony. There is an extra charge for postage if the recording is mailed to you.
ADA Accommodation
