This month, I’m excited to recognize Vickie Shaw, Executive Director of Fit to Recover, as a neighbor who’s helping to make District 5 a better community.

When you walk through the doors of Fit to Recover (FTR), you’re greeted by a sign that reads: “Just Breathe, You’re Safe.” Those four words capture what makes this place so special.

What began as a fitness space for people in recovery has grown into a vibrant community hub offering fitness classes, nutrition, art, cooking, music, and opportunities to connect. While FTR’s mission is to support people recovering from substance use disorders, everyone is welcome.

Through Vickie’s leadership, Fit to Recover has become a place where people can heal, build community, and find belonging. Thank you, Vicki and the entire Fit to Recover team, for making the Ballpark neighborhood—and District 5—a stronger, healthier, and more connected place.
