North Temple Economic Action Plan

Shape the Future of North Temple

Description

Salt Lake City is working to make North Temple a safer, more vibrant place for residents and businesses. This plan focuses on supporting local businesses, improving public spaces, and creating a welcoming corridor that connects the airport to downtown. It addresses challenges like safety, retail loss, and development pressures while building on opportunities like new housing and transit access. The goal is to balance growth with community needs and keep the area livable and inclusive.

Need to Know

  • Over 5,000 new housing units are planned or under construction along North Temple.
  • The plan focuses on local business support, safety improvements, and placemaking.
  • Key strategies include:
    • Development Task Force for better communication
    • Special Assessment Area (SAA) to fund improvement and security
    • Retail Sub-Leasing Program to help small businesses access ground-floor spaces
    • District branding and streetscape upgrades near 900 West
    • Non-peak hour on-street parking may be added east of I-15 to help retail

What’s Next

In conjunction with property owners, businesses, and community groups, the city will work to implement these recommendations. Expect more outreach, design studies, and pilot programs for parking and branding. If you’re a business owner, you’ll have opportunities to join programs like retail sub-leasing or help shape the SAA.
