When do I need a permit?

What is the timeline to apply for a permit?
Special Event Permit Application:
- The EARLIEST a special event permit application can be submitted is 364 days prior to the requested start date.
- The LATEST a special event permit application can be submitted is NO later than 30 DAYS prior to the requested start date.
- For larger or first time events, we recommend applying 3-6 months in advance.
Demonstration Permit Application:
- The EARLIEST a demonstration permit application can be submitted is 364 days prior to the requested start date.
- The LATEST a demonstration permit application can be submitted is NO later than 30 DAYS prior to the requested start date.
- Any spontaneous demonstrations responding to a current event, please contact the Event Permit office for more information (EventPermits@slcgov.com 801-535-6121).
Film Permit Application:
- Must be submitted no later than 4 business days prior to the start of filming.
- A film permit application can have up to 3 locations per application.
- If you have a total cast and crew of 4 or less, please contact the Event Permitting office for more information ( EventPermits@slcgov.com 801-535-6121).
Block Party Permit Application:
- All Block Party permit requests should be submitted no later than 14 days prior to the requested day.

How much does a permit application cost?
Special Event Permit and Film Permit: $121.00 application fee*
Demonstration Permit Application: $6.00 application fee*
Block Party: Free to apply*
*additional fees or costs may be assessed during the permitting process based on each individual application.

I want to host an activity or film on private property, do I need a permit?
In Salt Lake City, you do not need a permit through this office to host an activity or film only using private property, with the approval of the property owner. Depending on the scale and scope of your activity, other permits may be required. Please contact the Event Permitting office for more information (EventPermits@slcgov.com 801-535-6121).
Where do I obtain local consent from SLC to sell alcohol on private property?
Single Event Application Packet
Email a completed Single Event Application to business.license@slcgov.com . The applications need to be submitted no later than 18 business days before the event.

New Special Event Permitting Process
We are thrilled to announce that Salt Lake City has partnered with OpenCounter to implement a digital special event permit solution! Our new special event permit application portal is now live as of September 15, 2021. This new portal will dramatically streamline the special event permit application process, providing a single point of entry for our different special event permit types. This new system will provide a centralized location to determine what applications are required, and allow you to apply for and review application status in one place.
