Fleet Block Open Space

The first public survey is open from August 11- August 31.

Project Description

The City has designated approximately 3-acres of the Fleet Block for a public open space to provide access to nature, recreation opportunities, gathering areas, and more for the Granary District neighborhood and the broader city. This vision was made official in the Reimagine Nature Public Lands Master Plan.

In addition to the new public open space, the Salt Lake City Arts Council has identified this site for a public artwork commission. The artwork will be designed along with the open space to ensure a cohesive, beautiful experience. In the spirit of what the site has represented in the past, the City aims to design a public space and commission a public artwork that reflects themes of social justice – signifying a welcoming, inclusive, and just city.

A final preferred vision for the public space should be determined by early 2026.  Design is anticipated to last through 2026. Construction on the public space and installation of the public artwork may begin as soon as 2027.

The full project background is available on the main project page .

Project Location

The future open space will be on the southeast corner of the former Fleet Block site – the city block between 300 West and 400 West and 800 South and 900 South. An approximate address is 320 West 900 South.

Community Engagement Timeline

Community engagement is a central component of this project. Community members will have several opportunities to provide input on the design for the public space and the public artwork.

Phase 1, Summer 2025:

The City will release an online survey to the public and host community conversations to collect ideas for the open space and the public artwork.

Phase 2, Fall 2025:

The City will take the ideas from phase 1 and develop several conceptual options for the design of the public space. The City will then host a public meeting, open an online survey, and conduct another round of community conversations specifically around the concept options.

Phase 3, Winter 2025-2026:

The project team will solicit public feedback about the conceptual designs and combine the most loved aspects into a final, preferred vision to share with the community.

Online Survey: Help Shape the Future!

We’d love to hear from you! Take a few minutes to share your thoughts in our online survey and help us create a space that reflects the community’s vision, values, and ideas. Your input will directly guide the design of this future public space. The first survey is open from August 11- August 31. This fall, we’ll share what we’ve heard and present design alternatives based on your feedback.

Community Conversation

As part of the planning process, the City will be supporting volunteer-led Community Conversations — informal gatherings designed to give community members a space to share their thoughts, hopes, and ideas for the future of the Fleet Block Open Space.

These conversations are meant to foster open, honest, and respectful dialogue between neighbors. Whether you’re hosting or participating, your voice matters. We’re currently looking for volunteers to host these conversations! If you enjoy bringing people together and want to help shape this space, we’d love to hear from you. The first round of Community Conversations will take place August 11–31.

If you’re interested in hosting a session or would like more information, please reach out to makaylah.maponga@slc.gov.

Let’s shape the Fleet Block Public Open Space — together.
