Salt Lake City Adopts Generative AI to Enhance Public Services

Salt Lake City is integrating generative AI into our operations to improve efficiency, enhance public engagement, and better serve our community.

This innovative technology is helping us:

  • Streamline administrative tasks, allowing staff to focus on delivering better services.
  • Provide clearer and more accessible information to residents.
  • Improve response times for inquiries and public services.
  • Support data-driven decision-making for a smarter, more responsive government.

While generative AI enhances our capabilities, keeping a human in the loop remains essential. We are committed to using generative AI responsibly, ensuring transparency, and maintaining a people first approach in all government operations.

Our goal is to leverage this technology to make local government more efficient, accessible, and responsive to your needs. We welcome your feedback as we embrace this innovation together.

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) presents users with an opportunity to work better, faster, and smarter. This Guide is designed to help Salt Lake City employees, contractors, volunteers, or others conducting City business understand the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence policy, and apply it when using generative AI for City business. The Guide explains the difference between AI and Generative AI (GenAI) before outlining key policy sections: Responsibilities, Privacy, and Use of Generative AI. It details risks and safe usage practices to protect City data. The appendices include the Generative AI policy (Appendix A), learning resources (Appendix B), risk levels and prohibited uses (Appendix C), and a glossary (Appendix D).

Transparency & Accountability

We are committed to responsible Generative AI use and keeping the public informed whenever AI-generated content is used. To support transparency, we are introducing this marker:

GenAI Marker

It will appear on webpages, communications, and other City material when generative AI has been used to develop the material. This allows our constituents to easily identify generative AI-assisted content. Additionally, this language below will appear on City webpages to be fully transparent.
