Salt Lake City Celebrates CDBG 50th Anniversary

Celebrating its 50th anniversary. The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program celebrated its 50th anniversary this year. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) began administering CDBG in 1974. Since then, CDBG has stood fostered vibrant and inclusive communities nationwide. It has empowered local governments to:
- Address diverse community needs.
- Promote sustainable growth.
- Enhance residents quality of life.
- Ensured equitable access to resources for all residents.
The City now reflects on the program’s achievements and acknowledge ongoing challenges. We reaffirm our dedication to building resilient communities for future generations. From 1989 to 2023 the City has invested over $140 million in CDBG into community development.
What is CDBG?
The CDBG program supports community development activates nation wide. It’s goal is to build stronger and more resilient communities. Our CDBG work primarily helps low – moderate income families in Salt Lake City. Activities done with CDBG includes:
- Infrastructure
- Economic development projects
- Public facilities installation
- Community centers
- Housing rehabilitation
- Public services
- Clearance/acquisition
- Microenterprise assistance
- Code enforcement
- Homeowner assistance
Since 2015, the City has granted $27 million dollars of CDBG funding to 49 different agencies. These agencies have then completed over 170 different projects with those funds.
