Salt Lake City Celebrates CDBG 50th Anniversary

Salt Lake City Celebrates CDBG 50th Anniversary

Overview

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development(HUD), stands as a beacon of commitment to fostering vibrant and inclusive communities nationwide. Since its inception, the CDBG program has empowered local governments to address diverse community needs, promoting sustainable growth, enhancing the quality of life, and ensuring equitable access to resources for all residents, regardless of socioeconomic status. As Salt Lake City honors this milestone, we reflect on the program’s achievements, acknowledge ongoing challenges, and reaffirm our dedication to building resilient communities for future generations. Between 1989 and 2023 the City has invested over $140 million dollars from CDBG to a number of community development needs in the city.

What is CDBG?

The CDBG program supports community development activates to build stronger and more resilient communities. CDBG is used to help primarily low – moderate income families throughout all of Salt Lake City. Activities done with CDBG may include but are not limited to: infrastructure, economic development projects, public facilities installation, community centers, housing rehabilitation, public services, clearance/acquisition, microenterprise assistance, code enforcement, and homeowner assistance. Between 2015 and 2022, Salt Lake City has granted $27 million dollars of CDBG funding to 49 different non-profit or internal recipients, who have completed over 170 different projects.
