Rail Road Quiet Zone Improvements

Responsive Margin

Overview

Salt Lake City will be working on several railroad crossings to meet Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) quiet zone requirements. Work will take place at the crossings at 200 South and 1578 West, 345 S Orange Street, 83 South Navajo Street, and 5 South 1000 West. Each location will have slightly different work, and construction is expected to last one to two months at each crossing.

Work at the South Temple crossing is needed to keep it in compliance with FRA quiet zone regulations. The other three crossings will receive safety upgrades to support the creation of a new quiet zone on the west side of the city.

Other railroad entities, such as Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) and Patriot Rail, will also be performing work at these crossings at the same time as the City’s construction activities.

During construction, residents can expect temporary closures and detours.

Crossing Location Details

1578 West 200 South Crossing

Work at this location will include closing 200 South at the rail road crossing. Curb and gutter will be added at the Montgomery and 200 South intersection. The intersection will remain open to east bound and south bound traffic. On the west side of the crossing, 200 South will also be closed to through traffic and will end in a cul-de-sac. New signage will be installed to reflect these changes. See graphic below of new roadway design.

At the railroad crossing, crews will remove the concrete panels and crossing gate arms near the tracks. Schedule details will be shared as they are finalized.

345 South Orange Street

At the railroad crossing, crews will remove and replace the concrete panels near the tracks, install a new driveway for maintenance access, and upgrade the crossing gate system to include four gate arms. Signs and roadway markings will also be updated.

83 South Navajo Street

At the railroad crossing, crews will remove and replace the concrete panels near the tracks, install a new driveway for maintenance access, and upgrade the crossing gate system to include four gate arms. Signs and roadway markings will also be updated.

5 South 1000 West

Work at this crossing began in early February and is expected to be completed by the end of March, when the crossing will reopen to vehicle traffic. Improvements include installation of a concrete island on South Temple to improve safety for vehicles turning onto 1000 West. New gate arms will also be installed on the north side of the railroad tracks by UPRR

Please note that Enbridge utility crews are also working in the area to replace an aging gas line, see graphic below. For questions or more information about utility work, please contact the project team at 385-557-2585.
