Water Trees: Keep Your Cool
How Much?
Trees need 5–10 gallons of water per inch of trunk diameter. For new trees, this means 10–20 gallons per watering. Apply water evenly at a low flow rate until the soil is thoroughly soaked.
How Often?
- Newly planted trees: Water 1–2 times per week in spring and fall, and 2–3 times per week in summer.
- Ensure water reaches 18–24 inches deep to hydrate tree roots effectively.
Mulch Tips
- Add 2–4 inches of mulch around the tree base to slow evaporation.
- Avoid piling mulch around the trunk; leave space as shown in the diagram.
Why It Matters
Trees provide shade, improve air quality, reduce noise, and help calm our environment. Caring for them ensures they thrive and continue to benefit Salt Lake City.
