YouthCity Teens 9-12: Government


Empowering Youth Through Civic Engagement

YouthCity Government (YCG) provides Salt Lake City high school students with a unique opportunity to positively impact their community. Founded in 1994, YCG provides students with critical thinking skills while emphasizing the importance of civic engagement. Through collaboration with elected officials, city administrators, and community leaders, students are trained to identify and address key issues facing the city.

YouthCity Government Afterschool Program:

Get ready for another year of YouthCity Government afterschool programming!

With two different cohorts on Tuesdays and Thursdays, there will be exciting curriculum opportunities for all Salt Lake City high school students!

Important Dates:

  • Afterschool Registration Opens: August 18th
  • Program Dates: September 29th, 2026 – April 29th, 2027

Teen Internship Program: No longer accepting applications

Policy in Action

This is a 6-week unpaid opportunity designed to immerse Salt Lake City high school students in the mechanics of municipal government.

  • Schedule:
    • June 11th – July 16th
    • Thursday afternoons
  • Eligibility:
    • Open to Salt Lake City youth in grades 9–12
  • Topics:
    • Participants will be trained to identify, monitor, and influence public policy, gaining an insider’s view of careers in the public sector.
Service Squad

This is a 6-week unpaid opportunity with a community service focus, operated through a partnership with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s “Promising Youth” Program.

  • Schedule:
    • June 9th – July 14th
    • Tuesday mornings
  • Eligibility:
    • Open to Salt Lake City youth in grades 9–12
  • Topics:
    • Participants will be trained to develop and lead innovative service projects. The program will emphasize the importance of community involvement and prepare students to become active leaders in their neighborhoods.
