The Future Citizens PATH program is a pilot open to eligible folks (green card holders) who live within Salt Lake City limits and seek support with the U.S. citizenship process. This free program aims to make the naturalization process more accessible by providing legal help throughout the application process, grants to cover the application fee and citizenship classes.
The SLC program is modeled after Ogden’s Citizenship PATH program.
What the program offers for free:
- Legal team to complete and submit your citizenship and fee waiver applications
- Assistance with application fees
- Citizenship classes, including civic education with guest speakers (12 weeks)
- Interview and test preparation practice
Who can apply?
- Live within Salt Lake City boundaries.
- Basic English skills (ESL level 2 or higher). For example, understand and answer simple questions about your life, like where you live, where you were born, your job, and your family. Read and write short sentences in English.
- Meet the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) eligibility requirements, which include:
- Have had a green card (Legal Permanent Resident status) for the past five years or (or three years if married to a U.S. citizen). The citizenship classes will include these topics.
- Have continuous residence and physical presence in the United States;
- Demonstrate good moral character
- Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of U.S. history and government
- Demonstrate a loyalty to the principles of the U.S. Constitution; and
- Be willing to take the Oath of Allegiance. Find all the information at the USCIS Citizenship Resource Center webpage.
Expectation for participants
- Attend and participate in a minimum of 75% of citizenship classes
- Commit to completing 20 hours of civic community service and
- Attend all appointments scheduled with the immigration services legal team

How to Get Started
- Fill out and Submit an INTEREST FORM
- Once we receive and review the form, you will receive a call or email from program staff. You can also use the USCIS Naturalization Eligibility Worksheet to see if you are eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship.
