Ground Transportation
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) applies to public and private ground travel (bus, taxi, train, etc.) For public entities (state and local governments), the ADA applies to city bus systems, paratransit, regional rail, and more.
In addition, Salt Lake City believes in creating a transportation network that is safe and easy to use for everyone. We strive to create a system that ensures the safety and mobility of all our residents and visitors.
For private organizations, the ADA has requirements for taxis, airport shuttles, motor coach buses, and more. Private entities providing taxi service cannot discriminate against people with disabilities by actions including, but not limited to, these:
- Refusing to provide service to people with disabilities who can use taxi vehicles
- Refusing to provide service to people using service animals
- Refusing to assist with the stowing of mobility devices
- Charging higher fares or fees for assisting riders with disabilities than are charged to other riders
- Charging higher fares or fees for helping with disability-related equipment

Air Transportation
The Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA) covers air travel and prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in air travel. Learn more about what protections passengers with disabilities have under the Air Carrier Access Act.
The Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) has been carefully designed to accommodate people with disabilities. The restaurants, parking lots and restrooms are equipped with accessible features. Throughout the terminal and concourses there are ramps and elevators. They are located near the stairs and escalators and are prominently marked on the airport directories in the terminal. In addition, airlines can provide other assistance for their passengers.
