On August 9, 2016, Salt Lake City will begin a 90-day parking ticket amnesty program designed to allow individuals with extremely overdue parking tickets (prior to July 1, 2014) to significantly lower their fine by donating four cans of non-perishable food (in person) to the Utah Food Bank or by making a $10 donation (online) to one of five local charities (eligible to recognized 501(C)3 organizations) .
First announced during Mayor Jackie Biskupski’s budget address, the city expects to settle approximately 4,000 tickets through this initiative with the potential of raising $40,000 in donations to five select local non-profits. Mayor Biskupski has selected two of the five charitable organizations to participate: The Volunteers of America Homeless Youth Resource Center and the Utah Chapter of the YWCA. Over the past few days, the public has nominated dozens of groups including the Utah Pride Center, Wasatch Community Gardens, Fourth Street Clinic, Legacy Initiative, Utah Coalition Against Sexual Assault, and more.
“There are so many great organizations making a difference in our community, it is hard to choose just five,” said Mayor Biskupski on the program. “I look forward to learning about the personal and city-wide impact these organizations are making from the individuals who support them, plus it’s a great way to shine some light on all the good in our city.”
The public is asked to nominate for review their favorite local charity through a social media “Shout Out”. Nominations can be made via Twitter, Facebook or Instagram, using the hashtag #slctix, the “tag” of the local charity, and a description of how the charity benefits Salt Lake City.
Non-profit nominations will end August 7, 2016, with a final decision being made on August 8, 2016. There is no limit to how many or how often you can nominate a charity.
