For the first time, the 2016 Human Rights Day Celebration will be free of charge and open to the public, hosted by the Salt Lake City Mayor’s Office of Diversity & Human Rights (ODHR) and the Salt Lake City Human Rights Commission. Observed on its 68th anniversary, festivities will take place on Saturday, December 10th, 2016, and will include a unique array of delicious nouveau cuisine, multicultural entertainment, and the presentation of the 2016 Human Rights Award.
Commemorating the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly made history in setting the international standards to protect the fundamental rights of all peoples.
“At a time when many are feeling anxious about the future, Human Rights Day brings our communities together” said Mayor Jackie Biskupski. “Making this event free and open to everyone is an important way for Salt Lake City to reaffirm its commitment to safe guarding the dignity and human rights of all who call this great city home.”
The event will be held this Saturday, December 10th at the Sorenson Unity Center (1383 South 900 West) from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. This year’s theme is the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People. The Salt Lake City Human Rights Commission will present the 2016 Human Rights Award to Raymond S. Uno, retired 3rd District Court Judge and longtime human rights advocate. This year’s Organization Award will be presented to The Inn Between, a non-profit hospice facility for terminally ill homeless people.
