Today, the Sierra Club released a new report showcasing 10 U.S. cities that have made ambitious commitments to be powered with 100 percent clean, renewable energy and the steps those communities are taking to achieve their goal. The report features Salt Lake City, along with Moab, and Park City as leaders in the 100 percent clean energy goal.

Specifically, the report highlights Salt Lake City’s joint resolution, proposed by Mayor Biskupski and adopted by the City Council in November, which calls for the city to get 100% of its community energy supply from renewable sources by 2032. The report also highlights the City’s historic 5-year franchise agreement with Rocky Mountain Power, negotiated by the Biskupski Administration, which includes a Joint Clean Energy Cooperation Statement, as well as the City’s Clean Energy Implementation Plan, released in March 2017.

“The time for 100 percent clean energy has come and cities are leading the way,” said Jodie Van Horn, Director of the Sierra Club’s Ready For 100 campaign. “Local leaders know first-hand the harmful effects that pollution and the high cost of dirty energy has on people and families. That’s why nearly 50 communities, from big cities to small towns, have stepped up to break away from dirty fuels and committed to go to 100 percent clean, renewable energy.”

Mayor Biskupski serves as the co-chair of the Sierra Club’s Mayors for 100% Clean Energy, a national initiative encouraging mayors across the country to pledge to power their communities with clean energy. In June, Mayor’s for 100% Clean Energy led a successful campaign at the annual U.S. Conference of Mayors to pass a joint-resolution endorsing the 100% renewable energy goal in all member cities. To date, 150 mayors across the country have joined the Mayors for 100% Clean Energy, with nearly 50 U.S. cities currently working toward 100% clean energy goal.

“When Salt Lake City committed to 100% renewable energy last summer, we were the 16th city in the country to make this commitment, and the first in Utah to do so,” said Mayor Jackie Biskupski. “Fast forward just one year and there are dozens more, including two communities in Utah. The attention and support Salt Lake City has received since announcing our ambitious goals has been tremendous, and a very welcome sign.”
