This Tuesday, September 25th, the Salt Lake City Mayor’s Office will be hosting lunch-time voter registration drives at East, West, and Highland High Schools.
September 25this National Voter Registration Day, which was created in 2012 to create broad awareness of voter registration opportunities. In 2016, 750,000 individuals nationwide used National Voter Registration Day to register to vote.
Mayor Biskupski’s efforts are part of her participation in the Mayors for Our Lives campaign, a non-partisan effort between the U.S. Conference of Mayors and March For Our Lives to ensure the right to vote is available to all students in all communities. As part of this work, mayors across the country pledged to commit resources so students could register to vote at local high schools on September 25th.
“Regardless of party affiliation or political beliefs, our goal as leaders should be to encourage as many people as possible to vote in every election, especially our younger generation,” said Mayor Biskupski. “This year’s ballot is full of issues which will significantly impact the lives of Salt Lake City’s young and diverse population, and it is critical for these groups to have their voices heard.”
According to the United States Election Project, voter turnout among 18 to 29-year-olds in 2016 was just 43%, and a US Elections Project report shows that only 58% of Utah’s voting eligible population cast a ballot that year.
Comunidades Unidas will also be hosting a voter registration event on Tuesday at the Glendale Library in Salt Lake City from 5:00pm – 7:00pm, and the Associated Students of the University of Utah will be hosting an event from 10:00am – 2:00pm at Tanner Plaza.
In Salt Lake County, residents can register to vote online, by mail, and in-person. HB281, passed in 2018, also allows 16 and 17-year-olds to preregister to vote.
